“UFO” originally meant exactly what the words said: an unidentified flying object. It was a neutral label for something seen in the sky that had not yet been explained. Over time, however, the term acquired a very different public meaning.

The original meaning of unidentified flying object
The term “UFO” was introduced as a broader and more analytical alternative to “flying saucer”. Early investigators recognised that unusual aerial reports involved many shapes and behaviours, not just disc-shaped objects. How films, Roswell and conspiracies changed the word
The most powerful mechanism was repetition. The public repeatedly encountered UFOs in contexts where aliens were assumed to be the explanation.
Roswell became the central example. Although the 1947 incident began as a military recovery operation surrounded by confusion and conflicting statements, it was gradually transformed into a story about a crashed extraterrestrial craft and recovered alien bodies.
